Over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed various articles, on the one hand about companies finding it difficult to hire ‘good people’ and on the other hand, about poor recruitment practices. To summarise, companies are having to offer more money and better working conditions in order to attract talented individuals but the recruitment process treats them so badly that they often fail to attend even the initial interviews. The reports suggest that there is a shortage of talent in the first place, so competition to attract the right calibre of candidate is very strong but the way the candidates are being treated is so bad that they reject the companies early in the recruiting process.

I can see a few difficult issues with this situation. If there is a shortage of talent this means that the initial talent generating system has problems. We might call this ‘school’, ‘parenting’, ‘society’ or maybe a number of other things.
Simply offering more money and shorter hours doesn’t make your company a great place to work. If the corporate culture isn’t what young talented people are looking for then they won’t be simply bought with more cash. They’re not stupid, remember, they know they can be choosy.
If the people running the recruitment process don’t treat them like people and communicate with them well then they will get an insight into the corporate culture, accurate or not, and reject it.

Talent needs to be attracted and developed if it is to be retained and you only have to take a look at platforms like Instagram in order to see how some companies do that. Being there is a start, then showing the onboarding processes, the training and the fun the new recruits are having at work. Yes, fun, at work. Is that such a bad thing?
