I have seen a lot of CVs which only give a very vague and generic description of previous positions held: a job title and a list of basic responsibilities or duties. If your CV is like that then think about how you can add some useful details which increase the quality of the information you are giving and which quantify your responsibilities and achievements.

For example, information about a team leader position should quantify how big the team was and what kind of project/s it worked on. Numbers are useful to potential employers because they indicate the level of experience and responsibility you are accustomed to.

It is important to adapt your CV to each job application so that is emphasises your skills and experience that are most relevant each time. It's very common to want to write down all the responsibilities of every previous position held but this can weaken the presentation of your experience from the reader's point of view. Employers are looking for a specific set of skills and experience and will have indicated as much in the job description or advertisement for the position. If you have these skills and experiences then make sure you emphasise them when writing about each of your previous positions.

Keep an English Journal

The day before yesterday I spoke with a client from Germany. She was in England getting ready to go for dinner with British business partners who don't speak German, of course. We spoke about the various possible conversation topics, from smalltalk to business topics. The last thing I said to her was 'Enjoy the dinner,' and she laughed a little. Perhaps because she was nervous.

What is the best way and how long does it take?
These seem to be two of the most frequently asked questions these days in almost all walks of life and they illustrate the sense of pressure and urgency that we feel in almost everything that we do. One might expect the concept of ‘the best way’ to be related to a desire for achieving the highest level of success but the second, follow-up question shows this to be a false supposition. The reality is a desire for ‘fast results’ in preference to ‘the best results.’ Of course, the answer, which nobody wants to hear, no matter how correct, is usually ‘the best way is the slow way...
