You meet someone for the first time and you have just a few seconds to make that all-important first impression. Often referred to as an ‘elevator pitch’, it’s the short introduction you want to make to open up potential opportunities by making a connection with the other person. Many people find this a challenge in their own languages but how about having to do it in English?

It’s called an ‘elevator pitch’ because the idea is you might share an elevator with someone and rather than share a few moments of silence, you might exchange information but you don’t have long, perhaps fifteen to twenty seconds.

Of course, this isn’t limited to sharing an elevator. The basic concept is to be able to answer a simple question with a simple but informative answer. That question is ‘What do you do?’ and its basic meaning is ‘What’s your job?’

You probably don’t simply want to tell the person your job title or hand them your business card. Instead, you might want to express how much experience you have in adding value to other people’s lives in some way, what you are currently working on and where you are going in the future.

For example: I’ve spent the last 3 years working on the development of new technologies to make driving safer and more comfortable. I’m currently the head of a team working on topics related to autonomous driving which we will have ready for series production by the end of the year. I want to use this experience to move up to a head of department position next year.
